I got the sense, after hours around art in Toledo and Madrid, that this is what it means to live forever. Some people cement their legacies with medals and wealth, and that's fine, but to leave something like this for generations to see, that is what it means to leave something -- some of the best stuff ever made -- behind. Books too; to have your novel on every shelf, read by every pupil, then you have led a meaningful life. I think that before my life is said and done, I need to have written some equivalent to Picasso and Goya and the rest, and then I can die and say I did it all very right. With all this talk of careers, to have done something else seems like to have just gotten by.
